Product Description:
Pu-erh is a unique fermented dark tea with roots tracing back over a thousand years to Yunnan Province, China. Unlike most teas, which are prized for their freshness, Pu-erh is aged and fermented — a process that transforms the leaf over time, deepening its flavour and character much like a fine wine or whisky. The longer it ages, the smoother and more complex it becomes.

Made from large-leaf varietals of the Camellia sinensis plant grown in Yunnan's mountainous regions, Pu-erh undergoes a special microbial fermentation process (either naturally over years, or accelerated through "ripe" processing) that gives it its signature dark colour, earthy aroma, and distinctively smooth, mellow taste.

At Brewesty, we source genuine Yunnan Pu-erh, offering a tea experience unlike anything else in our range — bold, earthy, and steeped in centuries of tradition.

Tasting Notes:
Pu-erh delivers a deep, earthy flavour profile with notes of damp forest floor, dark wood, and a subtle sweetness that develops with each steep. The liquor is smooth and full-bodied, often described as "mellow" rather than bitter, with a warming, almost mineral quality. Some batches carry hints of dried fruit or cocoa beneath the earthy base — complex and evolving the longer it's aged.

Why People Love It:
  • A genuinely unique tea experience — unlike green, black, or oolong teas
  • Smooth and mellow, gentle on the stomach even with multiple cups
  • Traditionally valued for aiding digestion, especially after rich meals
  • Naturally caffeinated, but often described as calming rather than jittery
  • A favourite among tea collectors and those curious about aged, fermented teas

How to Brew

How to Brew
  • Leaves: 1 heaped teaspoon (approx. 3-5g) per cup Pu-erh is often brewed slightly stronger than other teas
  • Water temperature: 95-100°C (just off the boil)
  • Rinse: Briefly rinse the leaves with hot water for 5-10 seconds before the first steep, then discard — this "awakens" the leaves and removes any dust
  • Steep time: 3-5 minutes for the first steep
  • Re-steeping: Excellent for multiple infusions — can be steeped 4-6+ times, with flavour deepening and mellowing across steeps

Storage
Keep in an airtight container, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Unlike most teas, Pu-erh can improve with age when stored properly, so a cool, stable environment away from strong odours is ideal.
